The tool

Why add schema markup?

Stop machines guessing

Schema states your name, category, address, services and connected profiles in a format designed to be read once and understood completely.

Rich results eligibility

Star ratings, FAQs, breadcrumbs, prices and job listings in search results all depend on valid structured data.

The strongest AEO lever

AI answer engines lean heavily on explicit entity data when deciding which source to trust. FAQPage markup is the highest-leverage type of all.

Valid by construction

12 types, live JSON-LD as you type, validation built in, and prefill from any live URL so you are not typing what we can read.

Why act now

Why this matters

Structured data is how you stop a machine guessing. Without it, a search engine reads your page and infers that you are probably a business, probably in Florida, probably selling something. With it, you have stated your name, category, address, hours, services and connected profiles in a format designed to be read exactly once and understood completely.

That mattered for rich results in search. It matters more now, because AI answer engines lean heavily on explicit entity data when deciding which source to trust and cite. A competitor whose Organization schema names them, links their LinkedIn, Clutch and Google Business Profile, and marks up their FAQ content is a far easier source to quote than one where all of that has to be inferred from prose.

Under the hood

Which schema types matter most

Not all markup earns its keep. These are the ones that reliably do:

  • LocalBusiness — for any business with a location or service area. The strongest single connection between your website and your Google Business Profile.
  • Organization — the core entity signal for any brand. The sameAs array is the important part: it is how engines confirm you are a real, established entity with profiles elsewhere.
  • FAQPage — the highest-leverage markup for AI citation, because it hands answer engines pre-formatted question and answer pairs that match the shape of a query.
  • Article / BlogPosting — attaches author, publish date and publisher to your content. Those are the provenance signals that decide whether content is trustworthy enough to quote.
  • Service — describes what you sell, who provides it and where, which is exactly what a “who does X near me” query needs.
  • BreadcrumbList — shows hierarchy in search results and helps engines understand topical relationships between your pages.
  • Product — powers price, availability and star ratings in results for anything you sell directly.

The rule that gets sites penalized

Structured data must describe content that is actually visible on the page. FAQ schema for questions that do not appear on the page, review markup for reviews that are not shown, product schema on a page with no product — all of it is a policy violation, and Google issues manual actions for it.

This is not a technicality that gets overlooked. Marking up invisible content is one of the more commonly enforced structured data policies, and the recovery process after a manual action is slow.

The correct order is always: publish the content, then mark it up.

Where to put it

JSON-LD is Google’s recommended format and it can go anywhere in the head or body — position does not affect parsing. On WordPress, the cleanest approach is your SEO plugin’s schema field, because Yoast and Rank Math build a connected @graph and adding a separate block can create a duplicate, disconnected entity. On Shopify it goes in the Liquid template; on Webflow, in the page’s custom code panel; on a static site, straight into the HTML.

Whichever route you take, validate afterwards. Both Google’s Rich Results Test and the schema.org validator are free, and a JSON syntax error means your markup is ignored entirely rather than partially.

The playbook

Best practices

  • Put Organization or LocalBusiness schema on every page of the site.
  • Fill the sameAs array with every profile you control.
  • Only mark up content that is visible on the page.
  • Use your SEO plugin’s schema field on WordPress so the graph stays connected.
  • Validate every block in the Rich Results Test before you move on.
  • Keep hours, addresses and prices accurate — stale markup is worse than none.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • FAQ schema for questions that do not appear on the page.
  • Review markup for reviews the visitor cannot see.
  • Two competing Organization blocks from a plugin and a manual paste.
  • A JSON syntax error, which makes the entire block invisible.
  • Marking up an address you no longer trade from.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does schema markup improve rankings?

Not directly. Google has been consistent that structured data is not a ranking factor in itself. What it does is make you eligible for rich results, and give AI systems explicit entity data instead of inference. Both drive real visibility, which is why the distinction matters less than it sounds.

Which format should I use — JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa?

JSON-LD. It is Google’s stated preference, it sits in a single script block instead of being woven through your HTML, and it is far easier to maintain. There is no good reason to choose the others on a new implementation.

Can I have multiple schema types on one page?

Yes, and you usually should. A service page might reasonably carry Organization, Service, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage. Either use separate script blocks or connect them in a single @graph — both are valid.

Does schema help with ChatGPT and Perplexity?

It helps meaningfully. Answer engines rely on explicit entity data to identify and trust a source. Organization schema with a populated sameAs array, plus FAQPage markup on content that answers real questions, is among the most direct AEO work available.

What happens if my schema has an error?

A JSON syntax error means the whole block is ignored — not partially applied, ignored. Missing recommended fields will not break it but may make you ineligible for certain rich results. Always validate.

How do I add this to WordPress?

The cleanest route is your SEO plugin’s schema field, so it merges into the existing graph. If you paste it into a Custom HTML block instead, check first that your plugin is not already outputting a competing block of the same type.

Which schema type should a Sarasota business use?

LocalBusiness, or the most specific subtype that fits — Plumber, Dentist, RoofingContractor, Restaurant. Specific beats generic, because it tells the engine what you actually do rather than only that you exist. Two details matter more than the type: your name, address and phone must match your Google Business Profile character for character, and you should list areaServed for the surrounding towns you genuinely cover. Inconsistent NAP between your site and your profile is the most common reason local schema fails to help.
